andreas gursky

Andreas Gursky was born in Leipzig in 1955, but he grew up in Düsseldorf, the son of a commercial photografer. Gursky received strong training and influence from his teachers Hilla and Bernd Becher. Other notable influences are the British landscape photografer John Davies.

Before the 1990s, Gursky did not digatally manipulate his images. He makes large-scale, colours photographs distintive for their incisive and critical look at the effect of capitalism and globalisation on contemporany life. Since the 1990s, Gursky has concentrated on sites of commerce and tourism, making work that draws attention to high industry and global markets.
